[믿음]믿음은 인(因)인가 과(果)인가?
흔히 믿음이 없어 고민하는 분이 많다.
특히 믿음을 강조하는 기독교에서는 더욱 그렇다.
또 화두를 깨치는 간화선에서는 세 가지 큰 마음이라 하여
큰 믿음, 큰 분심, 큰 의심을 들며 수행자에게 이러한 마음을 강조한다.
그러나 많은 분들이 그 사실을 앎에도 불구하고 믿음이 생기지 않아 고민한다.
그리고 자신은 모자라는 사람이고 자신은 가망이 없다고
스스로 비하하고 자탄하기도 한다.
그렇다면 믿음은 인인가 과인가?
믿음이 최초의 씨앗이 되어 모든 것을 창출하는가,
아니면 믿음은 어떤 다른 것이 인연이 되어 생기는 결과물인가?
궁극의 정답은 인과불이(因果不二)이지만,
쉽게 말하면 믿음은 인이 아니고 과에 가깝다.
즉, 믿음이 모든 것의 근본이라 하므로 믿음이 최초의 원인인 것 같지만,
사실은 믿음은 최초 동인(動因)이 아니라 그 동인의 산물(果)인 것이다.
믿음은 그냥 오지 않는다. 숱한 행과 함께 온다.
이 때 행이란 문자 그대로의 행동만 아니라 어떤 환경, 어떤 과정을 뜻한다.
즉, 일상 삶의 산물, 우리 삶의 첫 열매가 믿음인 것이다.
믿음은 '열매' 이지 '씨앗' 이 아닌 것이다.
그런데 사람들은 씨앗은 뿌리지 않고 처음부터 믿음을 구하기에 실패하는 것이다.
이러한 믿음의 초기 열매는 다시 땅에 뿌려져 더 크고 풍성한 새로운 열매의 원인이 된다.
그러므로 궁극적으로 볼 때엔 믿음이란 결코 '인과가 둘이 아닌 것(因果不二)'이다.
믿음을 일으키는 것은 어떤 것이 있는가?
우선 행이 있어야 한다.
어떠한 형태로든 행이 있어야 믿음이 일어나지, 행이 없으면 아무 일도 생기지 않는다.
불교 사상의 하나인 화엄, 특히 보현행원은 이러한 행을
특별한 행이 아닌 보편적 삶, 일반적 행으로 지어나가는 가르침이며,
이 때 행의 개념에 언어를 넣는다.
즉, 말을 지어나가는 것도 행이며 이러한 말에 의해 믿음이 올 수 있다는 것이다.
그래서 화엄에서는 말을 잘하는 것(辯才)이 굉장히 중요하다.
이러한 말은 화엄에서는 '설법'의 형태를 취하기도 하고
'찬송(찬탄 게송)'의 형태를 취하기도 하며
'서원(誓願, 참된 소망)'의 형태를 취하기도 한다.
원을 세우고(發願) 부처님을 찬탄하는 노래를 부르고(讚頌)
누군가 참된 진리에 목마른 이를 만나면
그 분을 위해 자신이 아는 것을 정성껏 설명(說法)하는 것이다.
그리고 그것을 '바다와 같은 음성(音聲海)',
'바다와 같은 무진 언어(言辭海)'로
시방의 모든 존재를 찬탄하고 노래하라는 것이다.
그러면 믿음이 오고,
그 믿음에 의해 진리의 문이 마침내 활짝 열려간다는 것이다.
믿음이 없다고 한탄하지 말라.
믿음은 그냥 오지 않는다.
믿음은 나의 정성의 산물이요 내 삶의 밝은 결과이다.
노래하고 서원하고 설법하고 섬기고 공양하라!
그리하여 나의 진실 생명의 노래를 불러라!
내 생명의 노래를 온 세상에 공양 올려라!
그러면 믿음은 자연히 온다.
그러한 전제 없이 믿음이 오기를 바라는 것은
봄에 씨를 뿌리지 않고 가을에 열매 맺기를 바라는 마음과 다름없다.
저 숱한 성자들이 믿음의 물결을 일으켜 생사의 바다를 건넌 것은,
빈둥거리며 아무 것도 하지 않고 이룩한 것이 아니다.
생명을 바쳐 한사코 자신의 삶을 태웠기에, 믿음의 물결을 온 정성 다하여 일으켰기에,
믿음의 불길은 일어나며 믿음은 노도가 되어 온 법계에 밀려오며,
마침내 우리를 싣고 피안의 언덕으로 가는 것이다.
믿음은 결코 공짜로 오지는 않는다.
댓가를 지불하고 노력해야 온다.
