---사람답게 살려면 남을 돕고 남과 더불어 살아야 한다는 말은, 조부모와 부모의 일상적인 가르침이었다. 그래서 이 말은 내 고집이나 집념의 뿌리가 되었고, 나는 6.25 난리를 겪으면서 이 말씀을 뼈저리게 느꼈다.
또, 가족과 동기 간의 진한 사랑을 깨달았으며, 감옥에서나 피난처에서뿐 아니라 어디에서나 우리 모든 이웃들의 정으로 서로 엉켜 있다는 것도 깨닫게 되었다. 서로 아픔과 기쁨을 나누고 있는 하나의 공동체라는 사회를 깨닫게 된 것이다.

<적선을 한 사람은 난리가 나도 산다>, 곧 <남에게 선한 일을 많이 한 베푼 사람은 난리가 나도 죽지 않는다> 는 얘기를 자주 들려 주셨다.
---내가 정치 보위부에서 3 주일 동안 시시각각 죽고 사는 갈림길에서 공포에 떨 때, 많은 친구들로부터 내가 쓰지 않았던 허위 진단서를 썼다는 거짓 진술서를 쓰고 용서 받으라는 권고를 여러 번 받았다.
내가 살고 싶은 욕심으로, 내 양심이 유혹에 빠져, 지조를 지키지 못하고 거짓 진술서라도 쓰고 풀려날 생각이 어찌 없었을까만은, 만일 그랬다면 나는 이미 그 당시에 보복으로 처형되었을 것이다.
---소학교도 제대로 나오지 못한 시골뜨기인 내가, 서울까지 와서 안과 의사로 성공한 것은 내 정직한 마음 하나 때문이 아닌가? 이제 내가 살겠다는 욕심으로 생명처럼 지켜 오던 지조를 헌신짝처럼 내 던지고, 쓰지도 않은 허위 진단서를 썼다고 거짓말을 하겠단 말인가? 살기 위해서 내 지조를 꺾을 수는 없다!
나는 살겠다는 욕심을 버리고 죽음을 택했다. 그리고는 죽을지언정 끝까지 지조를 지키기로 결심했다. 이상하게도 그 순간부터 내 마음이 그렇게 편안할 수가 없었다.
--이 기회에 꼭 알려 드리고 싶은 두 가지 말씀이 있습니다.
하나는, <적선한 사람은 난리통에도 살아남는다> 는 조부님의 가르침은 옳았으며, 다른 하나는 <지조를 지키는 사람은 하늘이 살 길을 열어 놓는다> 는 말씀도 진리란 것을 체험을 통해 알았다는 사실이다. ...中略...
우리나라 최초(?)의 안과 전문의이시며, <공병우식 타자기>의 발명자이신 故 공 병우 박사님의 말씀입니다. 94 년 월간 중앙 8 월호에 게재된, 자전적인 글에서 밝히신 내용입니다. 이 글을 쓰신 후 얼마 지나지 않아 박사님은 세상을 떠나신 것으로 기억됩니다.
이미 십여 년 전의 글이라 기억이 희미하지만, 박사님은 산골에서 자라나시어 의사가 되신 후 부귀영화가 보장된 서울에서의 의사의 삶을 포기하시고 고향 두메 산골에 들어 가셔서 의료 활동을 하신 것으로 기억됩니다. 그 당시 안과 의사를 보기 어려웠던 점으로 미루어 보면 돈을 벌려고 마음 먹으셨으면 문제도 없었을텐데, 당신께서 밝히신 글에서는 못 사는 이웃들의 아픔을 외면하지 못해 일부러 산골에 가셨으며, 진료도 무료 진료 위주로 하신 것으로 보입니다. 그리고 당시 박사님의 조부모님이나 부모님은, 걸인이 오면 그냥 보내지 않고 꼭 쌀 한 줌이라도 드려 보내는 등, 많은 적선을 베푸셨다 합니다.
위의 글은, 6. 25 가 터져 인민군들에 체포된 박사님이, 요즘 분들도 그렇게 생각하시듯 의사라면 돈이나 밝히고 허위 진단서나 쓰는 못된 기득권층으로 인식되어 허위 진단서로 돈을 벌었다는 자술서를 강요 당하셨을 때의 느낌을 쓰신 것입니다. 이후 박사님은 아는 분의 도움으로 풀려 나신 후 도피를 하시는데, 생사가 풍전등화 같던 그 때, 박사님을 절망에서 지켜 주고 희망을 주던 믿음이 바로 할아버지가 늘 강조하시던, <적선을 한 사람은 난리통에도 살아 남는다>는 말씀이었다고 합니다.
나라 안팎으로 무척 어렵습니다.
역술하시는 분들만 아니라 평생을 수행하신 선지식들도 나라 안팎의 어려움을 걱정하십니다. 지금의 고난은 오히려 약과라, 앞으로 얼마나 큰 어려움이 닥쳐올지 모릅니다. 우리 나라뿐 아니라, 전 세계가 고난의 해를 맞는 것입니다.
