수행의 기본자세(3)-신구의업 무유피염

[신구의업 무유피염(身口意業 無有疲厭)]
-몸과 말과 뜻에 피곤함이 없어야 한다
수행은 피곤함이 없어야 합니다.
우리는 어떤 일을 할 때 곧잘 피곤한 생각을 내기 쉽습니다. 또 처음엔 의욕적으로 열정적으로 시도하다가 얼마 안 가서 제 풀에 지쳐 그만 두고 합니다. 특히 남들이 내 뜻과 같지 않을 때, 뚜렷한 눈에 보이는 성과가 없을 때 더욱 그러합니다. 피곤한 말, 피곤한 마음이 피곤을 더욱 불러 옵니다.
행원은 이런 생각을 내지 말라고 합니다. 처음이나 중간이나 끝이나 언제나 나의 행원은 일여(一如)하여, 몸으로 피곤한 생각을 내지 않고 입으로 피곤한 말을 내지 말며 마음으로 피곤한 뜻을 품지 말라고 하는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 지치기 시작하면 끈기가 없어지고 끈기가 없으면 무슨 일이든 이루어지기 어렵기 때문입니다.
마라톤을 할 때 보면 대개 좋은 성적 올리는 분들은 뜀에 있어 지치는 것이 없습니다. 남이야 빨리 뛰든 말든, 내가 뒤쳐지든 말든 이 분들은 시종일관 자기 페이스를 유지합니다. 그러다 보면 먼저 빨리 뛴 분들은 도중에 힘에 겨워 탈락하기도 하며 끝까지 뛰더라도 좋은 성적을 내기가 어렵습니다. 이렇게 꾸준히 자기 페이스를 유지하여 지치고 힘들지 않게 하는 것이 중요합니다.
또한 피곤하고 지친 생각이 들 때가 바로 내 뜻이 이루어지는 순간입니다. 나의 목표는 바로 내 옆에 와 있는 것입니다. 그런데 이 사실을 모르고 피곤한 몸을 내고 피곤한 생각을 내어 이 고비를 넘기지 못한다면 모든 것이 허사로 돌아 갈 수 밖에 없습니다. 그 뜨거웠던 여름날도, 그 추웠던 겨울 날도 모두가 헛 일이 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 피곤함을 내지 않는 것은 무척 중요합니다.
다시 무유피염은 공부를 억지로 짓지 말라는 것입니다. 수행은 자연스러워야지 억지로 지어서 행해서는 안 됩니다. 호흡을 지어서 하는 게 아닌 것처럼, 수행 역시 그러해야 합니다.
끝으로 무유피염은 우리 스스로 상처를 입지 않기 위해서입니다. 우리는 좋은 일을 많이 하고도 한 생각 잘못에 오히려 그런 일을 하지 않음만 못한 결과를 가져오는 경우를 많이 봅니다.
'오랜 부모 병 간호에 효자 없다'는 속담도, 자식이 피곤하고 싫어하는 생각을 일으키기에 그렇습니다. 아무리 좋은 일이라도 아무리 좋은 뜻에서라도, 도중에 회의가 들거나 싫어하는 마음(가령 내가 왜 이런 일을 해야만 하지?)을 내게 되면 열성도 떨어지고 지금까지 한 일이 헛 일이 되어 공덕도 없을 뿐 아니라 내 마음에 상처를 입게 되어 도리어 업장만 짓게 됩니다.
무유피염의 가르침은 이런 위험을 막아 줍니다.
