[세간 속에서 해탈 이루리(世間道中得解脫)]

모든 혹업(惑業)과 마경(魔境)에서도 /세간 속에서 해탈 이루리
연꽃이 물에 젖지 않고/해와 달이 허공에 머무르지 않는 것처럼...

화엄경 보현행원품에 나오는 게송입니다. 이 게송에서처럼 세간 속에 한 평생 살아가노라면 우리는 이루 말할 수 없는 어려운 일들과 어려운 경계를 만납니다.

세간, 즉 세속이란 얼마나 힘들고 어지러운 곳입니까? 비바람은 얼마나 거세고 우리를 미혹하게 만드는 일들은 또 얼마나 많습니까? 고통스러운 일에서 잠시 벗어났나 하면 또 어디선가 가슴 아리는 일들은 닥쳐 옵니다. 정녕 세속 살림이란 평범한 중생에게는 이토록 감내하기가 힘들고 어려운 것인지 고난은 끝이 없고 번뇌도 끝이 없습니다..

이런 저런 이유로 가끔 산에서 눈 맑은 수행자 분들을 만나면 자신도 모르게 이 먼지 가득한 속세를 떠나고 싶은 마음이 생깁니다. 이 속세를 잠시라도 떠날 수 있다면! 그래서 물 맑고 공기 좋은 곳에서 단 며칠이라도 모든 고뇌 잊고 살아 볼 수만 있다면! 이런 마음은 현대를 살아가는 분들이라면 누구나 한 번쯤은 꿈꾸어(?) 보셨을 것입니다. 그리고 그런 곳에 살며는 번뇌는 저절로 사라지고 해탈은 저절로 이루어질 것처럼 생각해 보기도 합니다.

그런데 보현행원품에서는 이런 생각을 단호히 거부합니다. 해탈은 먼 곳에 있는 것이 아니라 내가 서 있는 바로 이 자리 이 곳에 있으며, 아무리 어려운 일을 만나고 사람에게 실망하고 미혹한 일을 당하더라도 기어코 지금 내가 살고 있는 이 자리에서 깨달아 해탈을 이루겠다는 것입니다.

운동 경기를 할 때 다른 사람들은 못 뛰게 하고 자기만 골을 넣는다든가, 상대방을 매수하여 승리를 거둔다 하는 것은 진정한 승리도 아닐 뿐더러 아무 가치가 없는 일입니다. 이처럼 해탈도 어느 특정한 환경, 어느 특정한 경우에만 이루어진다면 진정한 해탈이라 할 수 없습니다. 평범한 일상사에서 때와 장소를 불문하고 이루어질 때 비로소 해탈이 진정 이루
어졌다고 할 것입니다.

생업을 포기하고 이루어진 해탈, 자식 노릇이나 교육을 포기하고 이루어진 해탈, 가장이나 부부의 책임을 저 버리고 이룬 해탈은 해탈이 아닙니다.
남에게 상처를 주고 이룬 재물이 진정한 나의 것은 아니듯, 남의 울음 속에 이루어진 해탈은 진정한 해탈이 아닌 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 일상생활에서 그대로 성불하고 그대로 해탈을 이루어야 할 것입니다.

해탈은 먼 하늘 별빛도 아니고 먼 세상의 일도 아닙니다. 일상에서 매일 일어나고 매일 볼 수 있는 그 모든 것이 바로 해탈의 소식입니다.

우리는 어떤 이유로도 세속을 떠나지 말아야 할 것입니다. 우리가 살 곳은 다른 곳이 아니라 바로 고통 많은 이 곳, 사바 세계입니다. 죽어도 같이 죽고 해탈을 이루어도 사바세계에서 고통 받는 어린 이웃들과 같이 이루어야 하는 것입니다.

그러므로 아무리 중생의 삶이 고달프고 아무리 하루 하루가 힘들더라도, 그 어떤 고통 그 어떤 아픔이 오더라도 우리는 세속을 떠나지 말고 울고 웃는 이 세간에서 이웃과 더불어 깨달음 이룰 일입니다.

그리하여 금빛 연꽃이 진흙을 떠나지 않고 마침내 저리도 아름다이 꽃을 피우듯, 우리 모두 더 큰 정진과 보리심으로 세간에서 기어코 해탈 이룰 것입니다...
