깨달음의 세계는 우리가 깨달은 만큼 전개된다.
10 살 어린이에게는 10 살 어린이만큼의 세계가,
100 살 어른에게는 또 그만한 세계가 전개된다.
똑같은 나이라도 깨달음의 정도가 다르기에 전개되는 세계 또한 다르다.
어리석은 이에게는 어리석은 세계가,
밝은 이에게는 밝은 세계가,
실망 앞엔 실망의 세계가,
희망 앞엔 희망의 세계가 전개되는 것이다.
깨달음의 세계는 깨달음이란 어떤 고정불변의 실체가 있는 것이 아니다.
유한의 세계, 죽어 있는 세계가 아니라
살아 움직이는 무한의 세계, 유동성의 생명체이다.
따라서 깨달음의 완성, 깨달음의 끝이란 처음부터 있을 수가 없다.
그것은 중생 자체가 성장하는 생명이기 때문이다.
일체 중생은 성장한다.
그것이 육체적이든 정신적이든,
형상이든 비형상이든, 생명은 끝없이 성장한다.
죽고 나서도, 소멸되고 나서도 성장한다.
생명은 한 번으로 끝나는 일회성의 것이 아니라,
그 속성이 본래부터 죽음, 소멸이 없는 ‘영원한 생명’이다.
그러므로 깨달음은 끝이 없다.
또한 그런 이유로 불교에서는
‘완전한 깨달음이란 그 이름이 완전한 깨달음일 뿐이다’
라고 말하는 것이다.

운동권 상대후보 2200여표 차로 거뜬히 제쳐
“요즘도 산에 자주올라… 학우들에 꿈 심어줄것”
겨울 히말라야의 크레바스(빙하가 갈라진 틈)에 빠져 선배의 자일에 매달려 목숨을 구했던 산사나이. 5일간의 조난 끝에 기적적으로 생환한 대가로 손가락 9개와 발가락 10개를 잃어 2급 장애인이 된 대학생.
작년 1월 히말라야의 ‘촐라체봉’에서 기적의 생환기를 쓴 최강식(26·경상대 체육교육과 4년)씨〈본지 2005년 2월 17일 A1·3면 보도〉가 두 번째 인생 등정(登頂)에 성공했다. 최씨는 지난 16일 치러진 제23대 경상대 총학생회선거에서 총학생회장으로 당선됐다. 운동권인 상대 후보를 무려 2200여 표차로 거뜬히 제쳤다.
“아, 예~ 학교가 이대로는 안 되겠더라고예. 대학에 낭만이 없어서 말이야. 방황하는 후배들을 위해 뭐라도 남겨주고 싶어서 결정했심더.”
17일 최씨의 전화는 내내 통화중이었다. 어렵게 성공한 통화, 짙은 경상도 사투리로 그가 쾌활하게 내뱉는다. “지금까지 총학들은 다 못 쓰겠더라고예. 만날 시사 문제나 신경 쓰고, 사회운동만 했잖아요. 학생회가 너무 정치색을 띠니까 학우들이 점점 등을 돌리는 것 같더라고요.”
그가 이끈 선거본부의 이름은 ‘꿈을 드림’. 선거 유세도 랩으로 했다. “아, 인기 좋았지요. ‘만나서! 반갑습니다! 우린! 기호! 2번!입니다!’ 뭐 이렇게 했어요. 하하.”
최씨는 98년 경상대 사학과에 입학한 뒤 2001년 해병대에 입대했다. 전역한 뒤 한국청소년 오지탐사대 인도 가르왈히말 탐사대원으로 활동하던 그는 지리산 등산학교 강사를 하며 산악인의 꿈을 키웠다. 2003년 체육교육과로 전과한 후 경상대 산악회 회장을 역임하고 2004년 로체(8516m)와 가셔브롬(8035m) 남동릉을 잇달아 등정했다.

그의 인생은 2005년 1월 바뀌었다. 선배 산악인 박정헌(35)씨와 함께 히말라야 촐라체(해발 6440m) 북벽을 정복하고 하산하던 중이었다. 촐라체봉 정상을 떠난 지 4시간30분 만에 발을 헛디뎌 크레바스에 빠졌고 20m 아래로 떨어지고 말았다. 자일로 최씨와 연결돼 있던 박씨도 낭떠러지까지 빠른 속도로 끌려갔다. 온몸을 조여 오는 자일에 박씨는 갈비뼈가 부러졌다. 박씨는 끝까지 자일을 놓지 않았고 둘은 1시간 동안 사투를 벌였다. 최씨는 등강기(올라갈 때 이용하는 등반 장비)를 이용해 필사적으로 수렁에서 빠져나왔고, 둘은 5시간 만에 아무도 없는 산속 오두막에 도착했다. 그리고 나흘간 강추위를 참아내며 버티다 현지인들에게 발견돼 극적으로 구조됐다. 치명적인 동상으로 최씨는 왼손 엄지손가락을 빼곤 19개 손가락과 발가락을 잃었고, 박씨는 10개의 발가락과 8개의 손가락을 잃었다.

산에 미친 산악인에게 바위를 움켜잡는 손마디는 얼마나 중요한가. 그 손마디를 잃고, 발가락을 잃어 걷는 게 힘든 데 그는 “사고 이후에 인생이 해피하게 바뀌었다”고 말했다. “농담 아니라니까예. 죽지 않고 살았다는 그 자체가 행복하기 때문에 재밌게 삽니다. 진짜로 절망이 아니고 해피로 바뀌었다니까요. 악몽 한번 꾼 적이 없심다.” 다만 축구 못하고, 배구 못하는 게 좀 불편할 뿐이란다.
호리병 같은 크레바스에 빠져 올려다본 하늘은 그의 인생관도 바꿔 놓았다. “하루를 충실하게 살자. 내일 죽을 수도 있으니까.”
그는 더 이상 전문 산악인이 아니다. 하지만 지금도 산을 사랑한다. 예전보다는 빨리 피로해지고 자주 쉬어야 하지만, “편안하니까” 산을 계속 찾는다. “산에 오르면 신경 쓸 일이 없고 재밌어요. 요즘에도 배낭 쌀 때마다 행복합니다.”
한 손가락의 사나이는 남은 왼손 엄지에 감사한다. “못하는 게 없어요. 문자도 보내고 젓가락질도 할 수 있고, 독수리 타법으로 컴퓨터도 할 수 있어요. 특히 소주잔과 맥주잔도 들 수 있어 사람들과 술 한잔 하는 것도 문제 없죠.”
그의 총학생회장 선거는 쉽지 않았다. “발가락이 없어 많이 걷지를 못하니까 하루에 수십 곳의 강의실을 돌고 나면 녹초가 됐지요.” 주변에서도 반대했다. “몸도 성치 않은 놈이 뭐하러 그런 일 하려고 하느냐”는 부모님과 여자친구를 “그래도 할랍니다”라고 고집을 부려 설득했다.
그는 인간미가 묻어나는 학생회장이 되겠다고 했다. 대학 내 열린음악회 개최, 체육시설 확충, 대학 인근 거리 물가 낮추기, 장애우시설 확충, 도우미운영과 학점인정, 취업박람회 개최 등을 공약으로 제시했고, 하나씩 실천할 계획이다. 쾌활한 음성 뒤에 문득 깊은 슬픔이 배어있지 않나 의심하는 기자에게 그가 한마디 더 했다. “산악인 꿈은 포기했지만, 장애인 산악인은 남아있지 않습니까. 인생에 끝은 없습니다!”
