개똥지빠귀

아마 넌 눈치 챘겠지, 이 근처엔
날개가 빨간 지빠귀 새들이 드물진 않다는 걸,
흔히 볼 순 없지만 멀리서
우리가 지나가면 줄지어 비스듬히 길에서 날아오른다는 것을.

그런데 어느 날 아침, 난 백 마리도
더 되는 새들이, 백년도 더 전에
심어놓은 줄지어 선 소나무 아래에서
내가 뿌려놓은 씨앗을 쪼아 먹고 있는 걸 보았지.

거의 움직이지 않은 채 날개를 꼭 접고는,
오직 노오란 가로무늬만이
검은 몸을 가르고 있더군. 그러다가 저들이 그랬듯이
한꺼번에 모두 날아오르자 저 빠알간….

난 오래 애써왔지, 아니 그래야만 했지,
저 영혼으로부터 몸이 분리된 개똥지빠귀 새들이 어떻게
불타오르다가 사라졌는지 말해주려고.
난 이야기할 때마다 그 새들을 놓쳤지.

내 얘기는 그만 하지. 어쨌든 난 지금이라도 죽어도 좋아.
넌 어때? 우리 눈을 감고
쉬기로 하지, 지빠귀들이 느린 동작으로
다시 본래의 불꽃을 품고 일어날 경우에 대비해서.

Redwings
Maybe you’ve noticed that around here
red-winged blackbirds aren’t rare,
but aren’t seen often, either, and then, at distance,
banking away from roads as we pass.

But one morning, I saw a hundred,
more, feeding on seed I’d scattered
under a line of pines planted
more than a hundred years before.

Almost at rest, their feathers folded close,
only yellow wingbars
break their black bodies. But when, as they did,
all at once, they lifted, that red….

I’ve tried for a long time, and maybe should,
to tell you how the disembodied redwings
flared and vanished.

I’ve lost them in every telling.

So much for me. I could die now, anyway.
Could you? We will close our eyes
and rest, in case the blackbirds, in slow motion,
assume again the flames they are, and rise.
