이 책은 지난 2009년 발행된 『Korean Buddhism』, 2011년 발행된 『6 Ways to the Heart』에 이은 삼부작 형식을 취하고 있다. 2009년 발행된 『Korean Buddhism』은 한국 불교를 알고자 하는 영미권 독자들에게 한국 불교 개론서 역할을 해왔고, 2011년 발행된 『6 Ways to the Heart』는 간화선, 염불, 간경 등 한국 불교의 수행법에 대해 심도 깊게 다뤘다. 이번에 발행된 『Encounter with the Beauty of Korean Buddhism』은 개론과 수행에 이어 한국 불교의 ‘문화’ 그중에서도 유형문화재를 중심으로 한국 불교의 특징을 소개하고 있다.
특히 이 책은 형식을 중심으로 소개하던 기존의 양식사 중심에서 벗어나 있으며 시대별 배치나 특징별 배치를 완전히 배제하고 있다. ‘불교 문화재에 대한 한국 불교의 신앙’이라는 발간 취지에 맞춰 각각 돌, 나무, 종이 등으로 크게 나눠 그것이 각각 어떤 염원이나 신앙을 안고 ‘성보’가 되었는지를 설명하는 방식이다. 구체적으로 1장 「돌에 새겨진 신앙」에는 석굴암을 필두로 백제의 미소로 불리는 서산 마애삼존불 등의 불상과, 석가탑과 다보탑 그리고화엄사 석등과 월랑선사 탑비 등에 대해 다루고 있다. 2장 「붓으로 그린 신앙」에서는 세계인이 감탄해 마지않는다는 고려불화에 대해 자세히 소개하고 있다. 특히 우리가 소장하고 있는 고려불화뿐 아니라 일본에 넘어간 고려불화의 도판까지 싣고 자세히 설명하고 있어 고려불화 전체를 한눈에 볼 수 있도록 한 것이 특징이다. 그리고 3장 「나무에 새겨진 신앙」에는 부석사 무량수전, 금산사 미륵전 등 나무 하나하나에 간직되어 있는 한국 불교의 숨결에 대해 설명하고 있다.

한국불교의 주요 종단이 참여하고 있는 협의체이다. 2009년 현재 조계종, 태고종, 천태종, 진각종 등 27개의 종단이 참여하고 있으며 한국불교 1700년의 역사와 전통 그리고 문화를 계승하고 한국불교를 세계 속에 알리는 역할을 하고 있다.

성보를 통해 본 한국 불교 영문 안내서
한 종교를 이해하는 가장 빠른 길은 직접 수행과 기도에 동참해 보는 것이다. 물론 경전이나 교리를 찬찬히 훑어볼 수도 있다.
하지만 굳이 이런 방식이 아니더라도 우리는 이탈리아에 있는 시스티나 성당의 천장 벽화를 보고 종교적 감흥에 젖을 수도 있고, 인도에 있는 타지마할을 보고 경외감을 지닌 채 한평생을 살아갈 수도 있다. 역사나 유물 그리고 일상에도 그 종교의 향기가 묻어 있다는 얘기다.
이 책의 목적은 영미권 언어를 사용하는 사람에게 한국 불교를 소개하고자 하는 것이다. 하지만 수행과 기도 혹은 교리를 설명하기보다는 1,700년 한국 불교가 만들고 간직해온 ‘문화재’ 그리고 ‘아름다움’의 견지에서 또 다른 ‘한국 불교’를 소개하고 있다.
이미 세계문화유산으로 등재되어 있는 불국사, 석굴암, 해인사 장경판전은 물론 2010년 국립중앙박물관에서 열려 밀려드는 외국인들로 인산인해를 이루었던 고려불화대전에 전시되었던 고려불화 그리고 그냥 지나치기 쉬운 옛 사찰의 해우소나 석축까지, 사찰 안팎에 있는 불교 문화재를 양식사가 아닌 신앙의 측면에서 자세히 소개하고 있다.
공신력 있는 집필과 감수
이 책은 전작이 그러했듯이 한국불교종단협의회가 필자를 선정하고 공신력 있는 전문가들에게 감수를 거쳐 완성되었다. 국문 원고 집필에는 전문 작가(윤금선)가 참여했고 미술사 전공자(심주완 - 대한불교조계종 문화부)의 감수를 거쳤으며 한국 불교 관련 문헌을 영역하던 전문가(박희원)가 영문으로 다시 완성하고, 영문 원고에 대해 불교와 미술사 전문가(지철 스님, 박준)가 감수를 마쳤다.
특이 이 책에는 한국에서는 볼 수 없는 일본 소재 고려불화를 비롯해 모두 200여 컷에 이르는 문화재 도판과 설명이 담겨 있어 읽는 재미와 함께 보는 재미도 더하고 있다.
